About Macallan
| Location | Scotland |
| Founded | 1976 |
| Whiskeybase rating | 88.05 |
Pronounced ma-CALLAN derived from two Gaelic words, magh, meaning fertile strip of ground and Ellen from St Fillan an early 8th century missionary.
As early as 1965, The Macallan’s capacity had been doubled by adding six new stills, and by 1975 the total number of stills stood at 21. In 2008/9 a dormant still house containing six stills was re-commissioned, giving the distillery a projected 30% increase in capacity. Two new state of the art warehouses were also constructed.
The Macallan is renowned for it’s continuing use of ex Sherry casks to mature the majority of it’s whisky. The Macallan spirit stills are the smallest on Speyside..
